Positive Phrasing in Your Marketing
Statements that begin with the word “don’t” give us a negative feeling.
- Negative: “Don’t miss our next event.”
- Positive: “Please join us for our next event!”
I see this one a lot and it always confuses me:
- Negative: “You don’t need to arrive until 5:00 p.m.”
- Positive: “Please arrive by 5:00 p.m.”
A positive statement will make us feel invited or welcome.
Positive Tone in Your Message
Your tone affects how we react to your message. Your text should get our interest instead of making us feel threatened or belittled.
- Negative: “Until you pay your final invoice, your website will not be published.”
- Positive: “Upon receipt of your final payment, your new website will go live!”
Uh oh. This one has two negatives … now we feel twice as threatened:
- Negative: “If you don’t sign up by Friday, you can’t attend our event.”
- Positive: “Be sure to register for this event by Friday!”
Review Your Current Marketing Messages
